Tableau’s upcoming updates

Software updates sometimes render computer machines outdated, resulting in users having to adapt to new changes. Tableau software users too will soon need to go through this process.

Tableau has recently announced that the upcoming release of Tableau 10.4 will be the last version of Tableau Desktop, Tableau Reader, and Tableau Public to work on 32-bit operating systems.

If your computer runs on a 32-bit operating system we have bad news for you: When released, Tableau 10.5 will no longer be able to function on these systems. On the other hand, and on a much better note too, if you run a 64-bit operating system you should get ready to welcome a bigger and better Tableau 10.5.

The need for this update came about due to the fact that 32-bit operating systems are limited to 4GB of memory which is a big limitation for such a memory intensive data analysis software.

This update will allow Tableau to deliver product innovation faster and create experiences that are more suited for modern hardware, thus opening the door to a  variety of new possibilities. For instance, the user will be able to enjoy fast performance while executing memory-intensive tasks like running complex table calculations and integrating large data sets.

What should you do if you have a 32-bit operating system?

If you happen to have a 32-bit operating system, don’t fret. Tableau will still be offering maintenance releases including bug fixes, security, and driver updates. Above all, this change will not impact Tableau Desktop, Tableau Reader, or Tableau Public for Mac, or users who access Tableau Server, Tableau Online, or Tableau Public via a browser.

We encourage impacted 32-bit users to upgrade to 64-bit operating systems to take advantage of future Tableau features and more powerful processing. If you are on a subscription plan or have a valid maintenance contract, you can upgrade to the current 64-bit version of Tableau Desktop at no additional charge.
